NEW YORK NEW YORK Gala 2014

NEW YORK NEW YORK Gala 2014

I loved coming up with this year's theme traveling through our city and spotlighting dance that originated here. Everything was "made in New York" and threaded by quotes from E. B. Whites "Here is New York".  Former American dancer with Netherlands Dance Theater, Kathleen Fitzgerald did the voice over quotes (with underscoring from our Musical Director Jim Morgan) and visual video projections were created by Eric Dunlap. Lloyd G. Miller wrote the opening music. The journey went from tap dance in lower Manhattan at Five Points (where it originated) portrayed by Tony Waag's American Tap Dance Foundation in an opening number with 100 tap dancers; to choreography represented by dance companies that started in New York such as Alvin Ailey, American Ballet Theatre, Ballet Hispanico, Dance Theatre of Harlem. As we visually traveled to 42nd Street we had from Broadway, a new work created by Alex Sanchez with new music by Steven Jamail; to theRadio CIty Music Hall with Rockettes Alumnae in a number called "I wanna be a Rockette" sung by Karen Ziemba; continuing down to Brooklyn in a controversial dance by Jonah Bokaer representing the avant garde; and origins of break dance in the Bronx. I enjoyed discovering Dustin Hubel a skilled circus artist doing mesmerizing work with a hoop - in Tmes Square one day after visiting the CTFD office and invited him on the show - the real New York at play. And the surprise addition was Paula Abdul's young talent she is mentoring, Michael Dameski. The unexpected is what makes good performers and performances.
